REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (MUST be specifically stated in application materials):

Graduate of Veterinary Technician or equivalent program and certified or eligible for certification as MVMA veterinary technician.

Demonstrated problem solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology, knowledge of proper restraint and handling of small and large animals. Demonstrated Customer Service orientation and outstanding interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Credentialed veterinary technician with certification recognized in Minnesota.

Duties/Responsibilities

This position is responsible for maintaining daily technical operations of the Small Animal Hospital. Additional duties will include maintaining facilities according to the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) cleanliness standards and ordering or stocking feed and supplies, accurate record keeping, assisting with training of veterinary technical students and other duties as assigned. The specific duties and work schedule will vary based on current needs.

Job requirements:
Technical Duties

  • You are assigned to Small Animal Float Pool
  • You work for the Veterinary Medical Center
  • You will be responsible to ensure that all services and supplies are charged for according to hospital fee schedule
  • Collection, catheter placement and other diagnostic procedures
Client/RDVM Communication

  • Liaison between internal and external customers and clinicians
Receiving

  • Client greeting
  • Animal history work up, physical examination, and pre-surgical blood draw
  • Animal cage assignment and set up
  • Assist with in-hospital patient care
  • Schedule appointments
Treatment Room

  • Assist with various procedures
  • Be able to rotate through the specialty areas and small animal medicine
  • Submit lab tests and get results
ICU

  • Monitor and treat ICU patients as prescribed by clinician on flow sheets
  • Perform nursing care necessary for critically ill patients. (Cleaning cages, catheter maintenance, food, water, and warmth.
  • Exercise patient at least twice daily
  • Participate in emergencies, including initiation of basic life support.
  • Call clinician on charge of case when needed.
  • Provide high quality patient care.
Wards

  • Provide updates on hospitalized patients when requested.
  • Assist with patient visits as needed.
  • Your are responsible for the treatments of the animals kept in isolation
  • You are not allowed to treat patients in the Oncology Ward once you have entered isolation
  • All of the kennels from discharged animals must be disinfected before you end your shift. Cage cards can be thrown in the garbage. Treatment sheets can be brought up with the animal at discharge or placed in the bin behind the nurse's station.
  • Return unused fluid pumps, stands and heating pads to the nurse's station or appropriate cabinets.
  • Cleaning, stocking and inventory as assigned.
  • Work as a team member
  • Assist in maintaining the hospital in a clean environment
  • Assist clinicians, residents, interns, and students with venipuncture
Other duties as assigned by supervisor, shift supervisor or Director of Operations.

Program/Unit Description

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The VMC sees over 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine.

Services unique to the VMC include:
Emergency services and patient care available 24-hours a day, seven days a week

Advanced technologies, such as a spiral CT scanner and color flow Doppler echocardiography system

State-of-the-art intensive care unit

Services of a licensed social worker to assist clients with treatment decisions, end-of-life issues, and support during diagnosis, planning, and treatment

Access to the latest advances in veterinary medicine by the people who are developing those advances
