Orthopedic Technician

Location: Minneapolis Minnesota

This is a part-time, 20 hours per week position. Day hours.

Responsibilities

Responsible for applying, removing, and adjusting casts and orthopedic devices. Provides instructions to patients regarding orthopedic care and treatment.

1. Apply, adjust and remove all common orthopedic devices. Apply and remove casts using a manual or standard practice as a guide.

2. Fit and adjust canes, crutches and walkers and the like, as well as instruct patients on use of these walking aids.

3. Serve as a knowledge expert for orthopedic device and cast care.

4. Provide direct instructions to patients regarding orthopedic treatment and care of devices and casts.

5. Responsible for brace measurement.

6. Assist with minor orthopedic procedures in the fracture room.

7. Assist with purchasing and inventory of all orthopedic supplies including supplies for all nursing services.

8. Provide direction and guidance to the medical assistant.

9. Clean equipment and rooms.

10. When appropriate and under the direct supervision of licensed nursing personnel, render some portion of basic nursing care as requested. Provide various support activities for professional staff.

11. Accurately document, as appropriate, all care rendered to patients.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Work Experience

High school graduation or GED

Two (2) years cast experience in an orthopedic facility or certification as an orthopedic technician

Or an approved equivalent combination of training and experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based on the understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another.
  • Knowledge of proper application of aseptic techniques, dressing changes, wound care and removal of sutures, staples, pins, K-wires and st up of surgical fields.
License/Certifications

Certification by the National Association of Orthopedic Technologists (NAOT) or the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT) will substitute for 2 years of cast experience.
