Masters Degree and Certification DUTIES:
The Vascular Nurse Practitioner provides specialty care to veterans with peripheral arterial disease, aneurysmal disease, carotid disease, venous insufficiency and wound problems related to these diseases processes regardless of age, gender or military theater participation. Care is provided in the clinic, on the inpatient surgery ward, the Medical units, the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and th! e extended care units.. The Vascular APN reportÂ's directly to the Chief, Vascular Surgery. The APN provides specialized care to the patients with vascular disease including: consult triaging, initial patient consultation and follow-up as needed in the clinic, caring for patients on the inpatient service, planning and implementing discharge and post-operative outpatient follow-up.

Primary responsibilities include:
1. Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of vascular pre and post-surgical problems.

2. Assessment and management of vascular patients being treated with conservative management, including obtaining and interpreting additional diagnostic testing as necessary to optimize care and facilitate positive outcomes.

3. Assists with management of the vascular surgical patient pre- and post-operatively in the acute care setting with specific attention to wound care needs.

a. Completes pre-operative work up and prepares patients f! or surgery or interventional procedure. Almost every vascular patient e! xcept dialysis access requires an extensive work up that includes: EKG, Adenosine Thallium, Chest x-ray, ABIÂ's, Medicine Pre-op, and blood work. Many also need a carotid ultrasound, vein mapping and, if the adenosine thallium is positive, a cardiology consult.

b. If the patient is having an AAA or popliteal repair, NP coordinates time to size the aneurysms for repair with the endograft material reps. Also coordinates the scheduling of reps for surgery time.

c. Responsible for bridging of their warfarin medication.

d. The Vascular NPÂ's staff clinic, seeing all post-op follow ups and triaging all consults

e. Manages the inpatient post-operative course including discharge planning since there is often no resident assigned to the service.

4. Participation in various research projects.

5. Education of the patient, medical and nursing students, and various other disciplines as needed.

6. Cleans RME (Reusable Medical! Equipment) per SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
The Vascular Nurse Practitioner collaborates with other disciplines closely to provide a concise, comprehensive delivery of care to ensure positive health care outcomes and promote wellness.

Unique competencies required for this role include:
1. Specialized knowledge and expertise in the care of patient with vascular disease.

2. Specialized knowledge and expertise in the management of acute and chronic wounds including, and not limited to: post amputation wound care, venous stasis ulcers, cellulitis.

Registration - Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nu! rse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U! .S. or in the District of Columbia . The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA

Educational requirements can be met as follows:
(1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR

(2) The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR

(3) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of profe! ssional nursing.

The following requirements are preferred for this position:
At a minimum, applicants should possess experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality. This may include experience as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) provided that candidate was utilized as a professional nurse and passed the State licensing (board) examination on the first attempt, and experience as Nurse Technician Pending Graduation provided the candidate possessed an active, current registration to practice nursing in a State and was utilized as a professional nurse. Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment - Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).

Salary determination will be based on a recommendation by the Professional! Standards Board and approved by the Medical Center Director.

A Masters Degree and Specialty Certification is required for this position.

Key competencies required for this position:

  • I n-depth knowledge of the most common thoracic surgery procedures, including the usual indications, the possible complications, and the usual post-operative course
  • knowledge of key contacts both within the medical center, at ot! her VISN facilities, and in the community so as to effectively facilitate the patientÂ's transition across the continuum of care.
