University of MN Physicians seeks an enthusiastic, independent Physician Assistant or Nurse practitioner who will provid! e support to the physicians on the Spine Services in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery The PA/NP will also provide surgical assistance in pre- and post-operative patient care at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview Riverside and University Campuses. Applicants should have a strong interest in Orthopaedic spine problems and a background in orthopaedic medicine. They should be interested in surgical and non-surgical practice opportunities and be willing and able to demonstrate a high level of independence with care decisions. The PA/NP will provide care in the Orthopaedic setting, which would include the operating room and the inpatient setting. The department is willing to provide topic specific training to the right motivated candidate.
The PA/NP will not have call duties except for some of the days around the yearly Orthopaedic national meeting and during the day when a yearly exam is administered to Orthopaedic Residents.
The PA/NP wi! ll be expected to function at a very high level of independenc! e assessing and evaluating Orthopaedic patients and consults.
Duties include:
- 1. PA/NP will assist in Orthopaedic surgeries, performing history and physical exams when necessary, write postoperative orders and ensure postoperative appointment scheduling. PA/NP will also provide pre- and post-operative care management and assessments.
- 2. PA/NP must be able to participate in the inpatient care of orthopaedic patients or patients requiring orthopaedic intervention. This would include reviewing patient records including test results discussing cases with the attending on call that day. PA/NP will be required to assist ordering and prescribing appropriate diagnostic tests, therapeutic procedures, drug therapies, and orthopaedic devices. PA/NP will provide bedside care including minor surgeries at the bedside as needed. Also required is monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits for select patients, in particular patients who ! are on the trauma service with a consultation request during weekday activities.
- 3. PA/NP will assist in Clinic seeing pre- and post-operative patients. Over time, this PA/NP will run an independent clinic.
- 4. PA/NP will also assist with phone calls and medical forms for selected services.
Education or Degree required: Graduation from an Accredited Physician Assistant Program, ROPA-C, or nurse practitioner training program.
License/Certification Required: Certification from the National Board of Orthopaedic Certification of Physician's Assistants or eligible for certification through the ANCC and approved/eligible by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for prescription writing privileges.
Related Experience Required (Type and Amount): Requirement of 5 years NP or PA experience, Preferred individual with previous inpatient, outpatient and surgical orthopaedic experience. Experience in work! ing independently in clinic and experience in answering patient and ref! erring physician phone calls is ideal.
Skills and Abilities Required: Team player, well organized, able to prioritize, effective communicator, thorough in administrative and clinical documentation, technically proficient.
